Getting Involved

The City of Surrey welcomes input from its residents while implementing the traffic calming program. To that end, residents are encouraged to point out potential traffic problems in their home or work area.

Initiating a Traffic Calming "Needs Review"

If you are experiencing problems with traffic speeding or shortcutting in your neighbourhood and would like to have traffic calming considered for your street, you can make your concerns known to City staff by writing to:

Transportation Planning Section
City of Surrey - Engineering Department
14245 - 56 Avenue
Surrey, B.C.   V3X 3A2

Alternatively, you can fax 604-591-8693, email TrafficCalming@surrey.ca or call the City’s Traffic Calming message centre at 604-591-4580.

In your communication with the City, please include your name and address, the street, the nature of the problems including the times of day the problems are most significant, as well as any suspected contributing factors, such as congestion at nearby major intersections.  You will then be contacted by a City staff member to confirm your request and concerns.

Typically, at least 10 separate complaints from different households in the same neighbourhood are required before the City will initiate a “Traffic Calming Need Review”, although the timing of the review is also dependent on staff resources and other City priorities.  Note that even if complaints are received about traffic on Highways or Arterial and Major Collector Roads, the City will not install traffic calming measures on these major streets and therefore will not undertake a needs review in these cases.

The Neighbourhood Traffic Calming brochure is available here. It contains all the details of this section (including the links on the side) and more in one neat PDF file.
