James Martens

James is the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd.

Having accomplished 28 years of service, James Martens is the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Binnie. He also holds a position on the company’s Board of Directors.

As COO, James oversees the operations of three Groups and their reporting divisions in the delivery of projects. He is also responsible for overseeing and managing the functions of Safety, Knowledge, Marketing, Business Development, Corporate Social Responsibility and Administration. James has also provided mentoring to Binnie’s younger staff over the years, many of whom have become successful Project Managers and Designers.

Outside the company, James volunteers with several organizations. He is a long term member of the Public Works Inspectors Society and continues to assist with reviewing applications for certification. In 2014, James worked with the society to coordinate a bursary, the Public Works Inspectors Society Award, which is granted to BCIT engineering students annually. Each year, James represents Binnie at the Annual General Meeting for the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – BC Chapter. He also attends the annual Public Works Association conference in BC.

James has been very involved with educational institutions. For several years he served as Binnie’s liaison with BCIT, where he established good relationships with instructors and in 2014 set up a second bursary at the college, the Public Works Inspectors Society Award which is granted to engineering students on an annual basis. He has since seen many BCIT students complete their co-op work placement at Binnie and then go on to become full-time employees. James has also been involved with local high schools, he coordinated a job shadow placement program with the Coquitlam and Burnaby school boards – giving Grade 11 students a chance to complete a six-week placement at Binnie, and learn about potential careers in civil engineering.

James joined Binnie in 1988 as a Construction Inspector and has worked on an extensive number of projects as a project designer on a wide variety of municipal Capital Works and land development projects. His work experience prior to joining Binnie was in the construction industry which has enabled James to give thorough consideration to constructability on all his projects.
