Jason Morden, P.Eng. , Project Engineer
Can you tell us a little about your journey in engineering and what inspired you to pursue this field?
Finishing high school, I was quite certain I wanted to pursue some type of professional degree. I’m not a fast enough reader to be a lawyer and probably not quite smart enough to be a doctor. I always gravitated towards math and physics, so decided to study engineering in university.
First year university helped me see more of what engineering is all about. Towards the end of the year, I knew I wanted to pursue civil or geotechnical engineering. Either way, I was interested in what happens under our feet!
Civil (municipal) engineering wound up to be quite a good fit for my skills and personality. It’s neat how much creativity can still come into play when it’s just pipes in the ground!
What do you love the most about working for Binnie?
I like the atmosphere of teamwork and having knowledge resources to draw upon. It takes a bit of time to build up that network, but it’s fantastic to be able to call up one of the senior engineers and ask for advice from time to time.
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone who is interested in pursuing engineering as a career?
Honestly, I think the best thing is to try to talk to people in the field. Ask them what they do on a day-to-day basis at work. It’s quite challenging to imagine what engineers actually do when you have no experience. Talking to experienced people works well, and you will find that most people quite enjoy talking about themselves.
