From manual surveying and typewriters, to smartphones and 3D scanning—Binnie has seen a lot of changes over the last 50+ years. We started as a humble husband-and-wife team in 1969. By the ’80s, we grew to 20 employees, and today we are a dynamic team more than 300-strong. What has stayed true throughout our history is our focus on our people. We know what makes us a success is the dedicated teams who are working together to shape Western Canada.
In 1965, Mr. Robert F. Binnie, P.Eng. founds R.F. Binnie Construction Ltd.
In 1969 the business is converted from a construction company into a consulting practice named Robert F. Binnie Ltd. This civil and municipal consulting engineering firm offers services to private land developers and municipalities from West Vancouver to Burnaby.
After nearly a decade with the company, Rob Campbell, P.Eng., and Darwin Lamont, AScT, take over majority ownership in the business when our founder, Bob Binnie, retires in 1986. Two years later, Rob Campbell is appointed President and Darwin Lamont, Vice President.
We complete our first artificial turf field at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex, one of the largest installations in North America. This establishes our reputation as a leading synthetic turf specialist.
Our steady involvement in Construction Services leads to a restructuring in 2006, and the creation of our parent company, Binnie Consulting Ltd., including two wholly-owned subsidiaries: R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. and Binnie Construction Services Ltd.
In 2009, we establish the Project Services Division, which is based out of our Burnaby office. This division provides project management services on various infrastructure projects and offers services to a wide range of clients.
We establish our Northern Division in Prince George to service the booming economy in the north. A year later, the division moves to larger office space and continues to grow its presence and service offerings.
We launch our Sports & Recreation Division in our Burnaby office and begin offering Landscape Architectural Services.
We review our organization with a goal to take an innovative approach to our business. We roll out a new strategic plan to grow our business a further 75% over the next five years. During our reorganization, we change the name of our groups to better reflect our range of services. The new organization includes three operating business units: Professional Services Group, Construction Services Group and Geomatics Group.
We form the Transportation Group, which consists of three divisions: Traffic Engineering Services, Highway Design, and Transportation Major Projects. In the same year, we divide our Survey Division into Southwestern BC and Central BC to better service the province. As part of our reorganization, we form the Geomatics Group, which is responsible for all survey-related operations. This group includes our Mapping Department, which performs legal surveys, and our Survey Division, which performs all other surveys that do not require land registration.
Binnie wins the Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Award from the BC Ministry of Transportation for our work on the Highway 2 Tupper Four-Lane Upgrade Project. Located in northeastern BC, southeast of Dawson Creek, the project has two objectives: improve driving conditions in the busy corridor and reducing wildlife collisions.
