The District of Maple Ridge retained Binnie to prepare detailed design of intersection improvements on Abernethy Way at 227 Street, 228 Street and 230 Street. The project objective was to improve traffic operations at the three intersections by adding left-turn facilities and installing new traffic signals to replace the previous all-way-stop-controls. Pedestrian and cyclist traffic were also accommodated to promote multi-modal transportation. Binnie’s project team worked quickly to meet stringent project deadlines that were necessary due to funding agreements between the municipality and the source.
Binnie performed traffic analysis based on existing and forecast traffic volumes to determine the appropriate laning configurations and left-turn storage lengths at the study intersections. The traffic analysis findings were incorporated into the geometric design of the intersections. Pedestrian and cyclist safety was also improved with new street lighting and a multi-use pathway to connect to existing pathways beyond the project limits. Binnie prepared Public Open House materials and attended the session to gather feedback from members of the community. Following the detailed design, Binnie prepared construction cost estimates and contract documents for project tendering and construction.
