Edgewood Park

2023 Parks Excellence Award from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA)

The City of Surrey retained Binnie to help complete the master planning and detailed design of the 9.6-acre Edgewood Park.  Edgewood Park is envisioned to be a key community asset and its development is for outdoor recreation, but also as an integral link in the city-wide biodiversity corridor system. Binnie worked closely with City staff to develop an overall park design to fulfil objectives including preservation, enhancement and expansion of the existing biodiversity corridor and natural areas as part of the greater city-wide system, development of an engaging play area for young and school-aged children, youth and basketball/sport court area, grass sports field, open casual-use grass areas, looped pathways, picnic area, paved parking, and site servicing for a future washroom building.

The park features a play area design that takes advantage of existing 4 m elevation changes to integrates grade changes to offer play experiences at different levels, slope play for all levels, and mix of natural and catalogue play elements to provide physical and cognitive challenges. The design also offers the ability for children to manipulate and interact with each other and their environment physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally.

In 2023, Edgewood Park received the Parks Excellence Award from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). The award recognizes outstanding design and development of park spaces using natural elements or repurposing materials.
