Due to the decrease in break/bulk shipping through the Port of Prince Rupert and changes in shipping preferences, the Prince Rupert Port Authority in partnership with Maher Terminals of Canada Corporation, CN Rail, the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia proceeded with the conversion of the existing Fairview Terminal wharf from a bulk and break-bulk handling facility to a containerized-cargo handling facility.
As a sub-consultant to Westmar Consultants Inc., Binnie (Omni Engineering Inc.) provided detailed design and construction support services for the water, storm drainage, gas, provisional compressed air system and sanitary sewer services at the site. Additional tasks included the design of variable pavement structures throughout the terminal based on vehicle type and usage, site grading, an above-ground vehicle fuelling facility, and the terminal compact sewage treatment facility.
Using practical engineering practice and company experience, a storm sub-drain pipe network was installed under the new rail track within the intermodal yard to help the pavement service life meet its design requirements.
