The Highway 1 Malahat Safety Improvements Project was initiated to improve a 17.25 km segment of Highway 1 on Vancouver Island to improve its existing safety record. Under the MOTI General Traffic Engineering Contract for the South Coast Region, Binnie carried out a safety review of the Highway 1 Malahat section to recommend both short-term and long-term highway improvements with the intent of improving the safety and reliability of the corridor.
Binnie provided over 700 hours in geomatics services for this project. Survey crews and technicians completed a topographic survey and built DTMs to facilitate the design. A laser scanner was used to map the sections of the highway that could not be field surveyed due to heavy traffic volumes.
After making recommendations to the Ministry, Binnie was subsequently retained to prepare the detailed design of the short-term safety improvements for the Malahat.
Binnie engineers divided the project into localized assignments and then tendered those assignments for construction as a single project. Safety improvements included intersection improvements with deceleration lane and acceleration lane, intersection upgrades, access consolidations, installation of median barrier, provision of turnaround facilities, provision of lighting improvements, provision of northbound and southbound CVSE pullouts, and an RCMP enforcement pullout.
