In 2017, The BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure (MOTI) retained Binnie to provide traffic engineering services for the study intersection. As the existing all-way stop-controlled intersection was performing poorly, a multi-lane roundabout design was developed to improve traffic operations. Binnie provided the MOTI with traffic operation analysis and with public open-house material for the proposed roundabout design.
Binnie used VISSIM micro-simulation traffic analysis software to model the existing intersection and the proposed roundabout design. The models were used to simulate traffic conditions during the AM and PM peak hours for the 2017 existing and 2040 horizon years. By measuring multiple performance indicators, Binnie was able to determine the safety, capacity, and reliability of each intersection configuration, and recommend the preferred option. VISSIM was also used to develop presentation videos for the public open house. These videos showed 3D simulations of vehicles navigating the existing intersection and the proposed roundabout.
The 3D models were customized to show street infrastructure and vegetation, and vehicle types commonly driven in northern BC communities. Binnie’s team also produced high-quality 3D rendered images of the proposed roundabout for the presentation boards. Binnie prepared VISSIM models of the existing intersection and the proposed roundabout design to facilitate traffic operation analysis and 3D simulation videos. Presentation videos and information boards were created from the VISSIM videos for the public open house, which Binnie attended.
Binnie Construction Services also provided the contract administration of the building of the project. The $6 million construction project required a detour to facilitate the construction of the roundabout. Traffic management through the construction site was challenging, but the contractor, Mastec Canada, Inc., did a great job of keeping traffic moving. The construction began in July of 2019 and was completed in June of 2020. Once completed, the project greatly improved the traffic flow through the intersection.
