Binnie provided civil engineering services for the $270 million, 500-bed Royal Jubilee Patient Care Centre in Victoria, BC.
Binnie’s services included several preliminary design options, design of a raised entrance bay and crosswalk across Bay Street, as well as re-grading and re-alignment of the curb along Bay Street. Binnie was also involved in the on-site storm, sanitary, and water design for the Patient Care Centre. Binnie provided LEED® calculations for Credit 6.1 Stormwater Management: Rate and Quantity and Credit 6.2 Treatment. Also in support of LEED® certification, Binnie designed the Erosion and Sediment Control Plan, maintained inspection and provided supporting documentation.
The stormwater management system for the Patient Care Centre involved various best management practices, such as landscaping, cisterns, aquapave, a small green roof, and a rain garden. During the design of a rain garden, Binnie Engineers worked closely with the Landscape Architect to ensure that the rain garden met the required water storage capacity. Binnie also provided recommendations on the depth of the growing medium, ponding depths and overflow/outflows to the storm system.
The project achieved LEED® Gold certification in 2012.
