Strathcona County retained Binnie to provide project management and landscape architecture services for the revitalization of South Cooking Lake Park. The new vision for the park is to bring urban amenities to this rural setting. The design of the park includes multiple sport courts, a new cooking shack, accessible trails within the site, spaces for formal/informal group gathering, site furnishings, amenities, and other improvements.
Binnie’s approach closely integrates landscape architecture and civil engineering expertise to resolve and refine the site planning and design. Our design solution considers program elements and site conditions to optimize layout of active recreation balanced with more leisure activities to enhance user experience. The layout of the multiple sport courts is adeptly positioned in relation to the location of gathering spaces, new picnic tables, cooking shacks, and large fire pit so activities do not conflict but complement each other. We applied the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to create safe and accessible spaces, and trails from the parking lot to the site amenities by improving sightlines, natural surveillance, and avoiding entrapment area.
