Carey Jones is a Project Management Technician who works out of Binnie’s Kamloops office. She may be quite new to Binnie, but has already received the opportunity to work on a couple of large-scale projects, including the Cariboo Road Recovery Project (CRRP) and Hwy 1 Corridor Flood Recovery Projects with the Ministry of Transportation.

Her primary roles and duties vary day to day, and include administrative tasks such as notetaking, agenda creation, action and decision tracking, scheduling based on a Work Breakdown Structure, and financial reporting via the Ministry systems. On a regular day, you can find Carey working with several people from various disciplines to coordinate systems and all the different project management components at every stage of the project.

Both major projects Carey is currently working on aim to repair some major access ways for residents along high traffic roads. These projects will benefit both the residents of Quesnel and any visiting tourists, as well as all Fraser Canyon travelers and local indigenous nations. Knowing that she’s supporting and contributing to large projects that are improving communities is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. Working with all different types of professionals in all different disciplines also makes the job interesting.

Carey’s journey to her current position wasn’t always clear. She had no idea what she wanted to be when she “grew up,” but Project Management just spoke to her, and a lot of the skills needed seemed to just come naturally. After a few different experiences in different industries, she eventually found herself at Binnie.

In regard to her career development, Carey is working towards her PMP (Project Management Professional) and is potentially looking into her CAPM first. She would also like to finish her bachelor’s as she is only a few credits shy.

She says her success can be attributed to a couple of mentors along the way who saw potential and gave her the opportunities she hadn’t identified for herself. Her varied education and experiences have been stepping stones to what she’s doing now, aligning well with her role at Binnie.

In her free time, Carey enjoys paddle boarding, reading a good book, enjoying live music and cleaning her house (believe it or not!) She’s also a huge F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan and can whistle any genre of music. She’s a member of the YP, Book Club, and Toastmasters groups here at Binnie. Her favorite quote is, “Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind,” – Dr. Seuss. Her advice for others in similar roles is to, “keep doing what you do well and go for the opportunities you want….speak up and always follow through on what you say you’ll do because integrity matters in every industry.”

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Carey at Binnie!
