We are pleased to announce that Binnie has received a 2026 ACEC National Award of Excellence and the Breton Environmental Stewardship Award for our Silver Skagit Road Flood Recovery Project.
As one of Canada’s highest engineering recognitions, these awards recognize projects that deliver lasting impacts by connecting communities, improving safety, and minimizing environmental impact while advancing sustainability. The Breton Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes consulting engineering projects that demonstrate exceptional commitment to environmental sustainability, ecological protection, and reducing carbon footprints.

The jury found this project exceptional, representing a step change in approach. Its lessons have the potential to be applied broadly to help mitigate the impacts of future natural disasters. The project deftly combined complex engineering and environmental analyses in a situation that was urgent and uncertain. The “build back better” approach is a testament to the pivotal role of expert consulting engineering in contemporary infrastructure projects.
When an unprecedented atmospheric river struck British Columbia in 2021, Silver Skagit Road near Hope sustained extensive damage at more than 20 locations, including roadway failures, embankment erosion, and culvert washouts. Identified as a critical priority by Province, the Silver Skagit Road Flood Recovery project was an emergency infrastructure rehabilitation to restore access along this key regional and industrial corridor while also strengthening climate resilience. With limited survey data and a tight timeline, Binnie spearheaded the emergency design response to rebuild the 58-kilometre route and upgrade infrastructure to protect against future flood events. Our work included repairing multiple flood-damaged sites through culvert upgrades, roadway reconstruction and realignment, and embankment stabilization, while incorporating environmental enhancements such as habitat restoration.

At Binnie, we are proud to deliver infrastructure solutions that provide long-term climate resilience and keep communities connected for years to come. Both of these awards are a testament to the dedication, technical excellence, and collaboration of everyone involved. Thank you to our client, project partners, and to our team for their contributions in re-opening this vital corridor.
Congratulations to the project team!
