Celebrating Over Fifty Years
From manual surveying and typewriters, to smartphones and 3D scanning—Binnie has seen a lot of changes over the last 50+ years. We started as a humble husband-and-wife team in 1969. By the ’80s, we grew to 20 employees, and today we are a dynamic team more than 300-strong. What has stayed true throughout our history is our focus on our people. We know what makes us a success is the dedicated teams who are working together to shape Western Canada.
2025
Binnie opens a new office location in Victoria, BC
2021
Binnie’s appoints new President and CEO, Richard Bush and for the following year, ACEC-BC appoints Richard as 2022-2023 Board Chair.
2019
Binnie completes renovation of new Calgary office and 4th floor expansion of the Burnaby office.
2018
Binnie completes renovation of 28,000 square foot new office space and moves across the courtyard.
Binnie completes the acquisition of Omni Engineering Inc, and expands specialization in electrical engineering, utilities, pump stations, and port and industrial infrastructure.
2017
Binnie opens a new office location in Calgary, Alberta.
2016
Binnie acquires Paragon Engineering Ltd.—strengthening our specialty services in trenchless technology, and utility condition assessments.
2015
Binnie wins the Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Award from the BC Ministry of Transportation for our work on the Highway 2 Tupper Four-Lane Upgrade Project. Located in northeastern BC, southeast of Dawson Creek, the project has two objectives: improve driving conditions in the busy corridor and reducing wildlife collisions.
2013
Binnie opens a new office location in Kamloops, BC.
2012
Binnie establishes legal survey services to the BC marketplace.
Binnie wins the ITE Bill Curtis Award for Outstanding Transportation Project of the Year for the Port Mann Bridge—The largest design-build contract ever in North America.
Binnie also receives two Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Awards for Construction Management and Supervision Services on John Hart—Highway 97, Bennett Creek to Link Creek.
2011
We opens a new office in Prince George to support the booming economy in the north. A year later, we move to a larger office space and continues to grow its presence and service offerings.
We launch our Sports & Recreation services including Landscape Architecture, in our Burnaby office.
2009
In 2009, we added Project Delivery to our service offerings across various infrastructure projects.
2008
With 100 employees, Binnie is listed as one of BC’s Fastest Growing Companies.
2005
We move our Burnaby office to Canada Way in order to accommodate our ongoing growth—and a year later, this becomes our Head Office (relocated from Surrey).
2004
Key projects like the South Surrey Interchange and the Mt. Lehman Interchange lead to new specialization in Project Management.
2002
Our business grows steadily from 2000—particularly in Transportation and highway design. In 2002, we increase our services across the Transportation sector, including an increase of on projects with the Ministry of Transportation.
1998
We complete our first artificial turf field at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex, one of the largest installations in North America. This establishes our reputation as a leading synthetic turf specialist.
1997
Opportunities lead to the formation of the Survey Division.
1995
The growth continues with the opening of our third office in 1995, on the Surrey/Langley border, giving us better access to the Fraser Valley.
1992
We open our second office in Squamish to serve the growing Sea to Sky corridor, including Howe Sound, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.
1991
Now with 23 employees, Binnie is ranked 40th fastest growing company in Canada.
1986
After nearly a decade with the company, Rob Campbell, P.Eng., and Darwin Lamont, AScT, take over majority ownership in the business when our founder, Bob Binnie, retires in 1986. Two years later, Rob Campbell is appointed President and Darwin Lamont, Vice President.
1985
With 8 employees, the original West Vancouver office relocates to Burnaby.
1980
In 1980, our company’s name changes to R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd.
1972
In 1972, the business quickly evolves with the addition of land surveying services.
1969
In 1969 the business is converted from a construction company into a consulting practice named Robert F. Binnie Ltd. This civil and municipal consulting engineering firm offers services to private land developers and municipalities from West Vancouver to Burnaby.
1965
In 1965, Mr. Robert F. Binnie, P.Eng. founds R.F. Binnie Construction Ltd.
