Sierra Yoyo Desan Road Upgrades

Sierra Yoyo Desan Road Upgrades

The Sierra Yoyo Desan Resource Road is the primary access to oil, gas, and forestry terrain in northern BC. The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines has partnered with the SYD Road Limited Partnership to make safety and access improvements to the corridor.

In 2010, Binnie helped to deliver over $10 million in day labour construction on the 188-kilometre Sierra Yoyo Desan Resource Road in Fort Nelson.  In 2011 and 2012, Binnie continued to be involved in the upgrade of 11 kilometres of the road.

Part of our scope work was to make safety improvements to an existing bridge structure within the project limits. The bridge had to be jacked to raise it on one end to improve drainage, bridge rails were added, along with bridge parapet barriers flared at all four corners of the bridge.  Binnie provided an on-site Bridge Supervisor and Ministry Representative for this component of the project.

The bridge improvements were constructed in the middle of winter in very cold conditions.  The road gravels were frozen solid to the bridge abutments which meant that the ice and gravels had to be chiseled away with an excavator to break the bond so that the bridge deck could be raised.
