Binnie was the civil engineer for the City of Surrey’s works yard and Operations Centre at 6651 148 Street.
Designed by architects and partners, Taylor Kurtz and Rounthwaithe, Dick + Hadley, the buildings included the 95,000 sq. ft. East Operations Centre, the 14,000 sq. ft. North Storage/Warehouse Building, and the 48,000 sq.ft. West Fleet Maintenance Building.
The Operations Centre is a four-storey building that houses the City’s operations and administration staff. The North Storage Warehouse Building provides storage and loading space for three departments: Engineering, Civic Facilities, and Parks. The West Fleet Maintenance Building provides vehicle maintenance bays, related shops, main stores, small tools repair, parts and tools storage and a pumps and controls shop.
Working with the project architects, Binnie reviewed the City’s functional requirements as well as staffing and operational projections for the present day, as well as the 10-year and 20-year time frames. Further, Binnie designed site servicing (water, storm, sanitary) and off-site improvements for the three new buildings.
