BCIT’s aging electrical infrastructure at the north end of the Burnaby campus was at the end of its serviceable life and at critical risk of failure. The BCIT North Campus Infrastructure Project (NCIP) set out to deliver a $50M electrical and civil infrastructure upgrade with the goal to support growing demand and establish the necessary foundation for future campus development.
Binnie acted as the Owner’s Representative on this multi-phased procurement and construction project. As the Project Managers, Binnie liaised and coordinated with various consultants, contractors, and stakeholders on this complex project. Binnie had to work closely with the construction manager, BCIT’s procurement and facilities departments, and the prime consultant to ensure the project was effectively executed.
Binnie was part of an integrated design approach with the construction manager for BCIT at their Burnaby campus. The project involved major electrical and site servicing upgrades, as well as the development of a pedestrian-only public realm space in what was originally a roadway and parking lot. The project included the development of a new permanent parking lot and establishment of a new block of paved public realm space including new planting, site furniture, and covered canopy walkways. Binnie worked together with BCIT’s campus development team and landscape architects to ensure that the execution of the project met the objectives of BCIT’s Campus Plan.
In 2019, the project was awarded the Envision Gold award for sustainable infrastructure by the ISI. BCIT is the first educational institution in Canada to earn an Envision Award at any level.
