In 2010, Binnie was retained by the City of Surrey to provide design and construction services for a new drainage pump station in Mud Bay, valued at $2.3 million. Binnie provided complete engineering design and construction services to upgrade the existing storm pump station in Surrey, BC. Site works were also carried out to raise the existing dyke and install rip-rap to prevent flooding.
The new pump station with architectural design now features two Hidrostal pumps, which are fish-friendly and meet environmental requirements due to the sensitive surrounding marine wildlife, including other birds and more fish species —an example to the right.
Binnie also placed a new genset, which acts as a backup generator that would be activated during power failure.
The flood boxes were upgraded and fitted with new headwalls and trash racks to convey flow into Mud Bay. In addition, VFDs and PLC complete with SCADA system were included for optimal performance and flow monitoring.
