Planned in response to the expanding population in South Surrey and the subsequent demands on operations facilities and resources, the South Surrey Operations Centre was designed to promote efficient works yard operations by accommodating field staff and reducing travel time for workers and equipment to project sites.
Binnie provided multi-disciplinary services including survey, civil engineering, traffic engineering, and landscape architecture in the design and construction of the facility. A municipal building which blends City operations with the surrounding neighbourhood and the local environment, the facility was designed to adhere the City’s Sustainability Charter, Wood First Policy, and Civic Centre Access Initiatives.
A critical objective of the comprehensive site design was to comply with the City’s biodiversity conservation goals. Our team developed a strategy to retain and protect existing trees and undergrowth, implemented a nesting strategy to support a new wildlife corridor, sourced and planted a broad selection of native plants to complement a series of bioswales intended to provide food and habitat for wildlife.
