Planned in response to the expanding population in South Surrey and the subsequent demands on operations facilities and resources, the South Surrey Operations Centre was designed to promote efficient works yard operations by accommodating field staff and reducing travel time for workers and equipment to project sites.
Binnie provided multi-disciplinary services including survey, civil engineering, traffic engineering, and landscape architecture for the design and construction of the Centre. A municipal building which blends City operations with the surrounding neighbourhood and the local environment, the Centre satisfies the City’s Sustainability Charter, Wood First Policy, and Civic Centre Access Initiatives.
The comprehensive site design for this project also complies with the City’s biodiversity conservation goals. Our team developed a strategy to retain and protect existing trees and undergrowth, implemented a nesting strategy to support a new wildlife corridor, and sourced and planted a broad selection of native plants to design a series of bioswales that provide food sources and habitat for wildlife.
