The City of Coquitlam engaged Carscadden to design and construct a new washroom and concession building near the main event space at Town Centre Park. As part of the consulting team, Binnie worked with City staff to design a plaza space around the new building to provide space for picnicking, gathering, seating and staging during large events.
The layout of the proposed plaza presented many challenges with coordinating the many converging pedestrian routes, with retaining free flow of traffic and accommodating space for respite. The plaza features a custom, oversized harvest table, a monumental bench with a variety of seating opportunities, fixed bistro tables with colourful permanent umbrellas, and a unique multi-colour concrete paving design. The assignment also included extensively redeveloping the park’s open space to add more usable area to the event lawns surrounding TD Plaza, which is a large open-air amphitheater next to Lafarge Lake.
The Binnie design team effectively collaborated with both the City of Coquitlam and Carscadden to achieve a unique design outcome that responded to the flux in pedestrian movement during events and created a sense of community while responding to diverse site conditions. Binnie coordinated construction administration working the general contractor Cedar Crest, through demolition, subgrade and final grad preparation, drainage construction, and softscape elements—planter beds and tree planting. Cedar Crest oversaw the work of sub-contractors who completed the concrete installation, asphalt installation, washroom and concession building construction, irrigation, and turf installation.
