The City of Port Coquitlam retained Binnie to complete the detailed design for the redevelopment of Veteran’s Park and Leigh Square as well as other spaces surrounding City Hall. The intent of the project was to integrate and revitalize the disparate public spaces bounded by Shaughnessy Street, Donald Street, and Leigh Square Place to become one cohesive civic centre. Components of the new design included:

• Expanding Leigh Square to accommodate larger gatherings and events with integral features such as a new performance pavilion.
• Designing a fountain that is both a playful attraction and an engaging focal point for the plaza
• Creating a corridor through the site to become an extension to the Donald Pathway
• Reconfiguring Donald Street to a pedestrian friendly one-way street as part of the local traffic plan
• Designing lighting enhancements to create a safe and inviting nighttime environment and that also included special effects to further enhance the experience for visitors
• Designing a parkette that integrates two large existing oak trees and includes a variety of features that actively engage with visitors of all ages
• Creating a new design for Veteran’s Park that elevated the prominence of the cenotaph to better accommodated Remembrance Day ceremonies by adding more plaza space and seating opportunities.

Binnie assembled a full team of in-house expertise for this project including civil and traffic engineering, arborist services, irrigation design, and landscape architecture. As the Prime Consultant, Binnie coordinated several other consulting disciplines that complemented the design team including architecture, electrical engineering, lighting design, and fountain design.
