On Tuesday, February 28, 2017, HUB Cycling held its 4th Annual Bike Awards in Vancouver, BC. The winners were selected by HUB staff and volunteer committees based on the efforts put towards bike education, on-site bike facilities, and infrastructure improvements, among other criteria.

Binnie congratulates TransLink on being awarded the Public Bike Parking Award.

In 2013, TransLink retained Binnie to manage the design and construction of a bike parkade at King George Station, the first station on the Expo Line in Surrey, BC. Designed by Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects, the bike parkade offers 70 bike parking spaces and is the first of its kind in Surrey. It is one of the first two new public-use bike parkades operated by TransLink in Metro Vancouver.

Binnie provided project management services from project initiation through to design, construction and close out.  Binnie worked with the stakeholders – including TransLink Infrastructure and Network Management, Marketing, Communications, Strategic Sourcing, BCRTC Operations and Maintenance, Transit Police, and the City of Surrey – to ensure their input was considered in the design. Binnie also worked closely with C-Media, the maintenance contractor for bike infrastructure.

Bruce Carscadden Architect assisted TransLink in the early formulation of the program and in building the project brief. The firm was the project designer from the schematic design phase through the construction and final completion of the project.

TransLink’s overall objective was to implement a project in support of the Regional Cycling Strategy for Metro Vancouver, which calls for “sufficient bicycle parking and facilities” and states that cycling should “integrate seamlessly with transit”.  The new bike parkade helps to encourage people to cycle, as it reduces their concerns for bike theft, giving them peace of mind that their bike will be secure if they leave at the station for long periods of time.
