Built in 2016, the Evergreen Extension was one of the largest transit projects in recent years. It was built to help meet the demands of a growing population, bringing rapid transit to the communities of Port Moody and Coquitlam, BC.
The Evergreen Extension is an 11-kilometre SkyTrain expansion which links Coquitlam Centre to Lougheed Town Centre and connects directly to the Millennium Line. The Evergreen Extension is made up of both elevated and at-grade guideways, seven stations, power substations, train-operating systems, parking facilities, a vehicle-storage and light-maintenance facility, as well as a two-kilometre bored tunnel which runs from east of the Barnet Highway in Port Moody to south of Kemsley Avenue in Coquitlam.
With the completion of the Evergreen Extension, British Columbia has the largest rapid transit network in Canada, at 79 kilometres in length. By 2021, the Evergreen Line is expected to carry 70,000 passengers and remove 40,000 cars from the road every day.
Binnie provided extensive geomatics services for the project. We provided surveys of the track centerline, elevated guideway span, horizontal and vertical control, piles, and crane foundations. Our crews surveyed from the top of the guideway and in the tunnel – where they used terrestrial laser scanning technology to monitor movement.
