The Seymour Falls Dam is located within a watershed that provides drinking water to a third of the population living in Metro Vancouver. Binnie’s role was to measure and confirm the profile of the dam and provide an innovative approach to the survey that prioritized safety for surveyors as well as the watershed’s environment.
Binnie carried out a three-dimensional scanning survey of the dam’s spillway structures and geometries. A fabricated jig that extended out over each Spillway Bay at 17 different locations captured data in key areas of interest. This method reduced the risk of contamination to the water supply and eliminated the need for surveyors to repel into the spillway.
The added benefit of the 3D scanning technology meant that more data can be captured in a smaller time frame. This method also reduced the risk of contamination to the water supply of the reservoir. Data collection with the use of this technology and the fabricated jig is safer, easier, more flexible and equally as accurate as conventional survey methods.
